Today’s dose of cheery optimism: Larry Smith’s TED Talk “Why You Will Fail to Have a Great Career.”
This surprisingly funny and poignant talk is a great wake-up call. Every year at high school and college graduations nationwide, students are offered the usual empty platitudes; “pursue your dreams” and “do what you love” are among the most popular. So why do so many Americans end up in careers they hate? Where did the talk of passion get thrown by the wayside in favor of “good ol’ common sense”? Smith’s talk is the kick in the pants that we need to deeply think about why we choose the work we do.
You just might find that the only person stopping you from having a great career is yourself.
